I love finding out that the bad guys are not so bad.
I have been thinking about what a new Star Trek TV show series would have to do to be “fresh” without falling too far from what makes the show so great. What I came up with would be a show where the viewer would get to know two very different spaceships.
Here’s the basic concept: A seemingly independent group of “evil” space marauders steals some sort of important object from Earth, and a new starship has been commissioned and a new captain appointed to pursue the marauders, return the object, and see that justice is served.
The object might be any number of things; perhaps it is a key rock that is used to generate enough energy for Earth’s replicators. Maybe the object is a living person; maybe the daughter of the Federation President was taken. A new weapon or technology? Who knows? The object must be interesting enough to survive seven seasons, and it must be important enough to send an entire ship after it.
But the “evil” ship did not steal this object for evil purposes. They need it to do something good. Perhaps they are on a mission to heal a planet using the object. Perhaps they need the object to save the entire universe. The not-so-evil mission of the marauders is the conundrum, and the “good” Federation ship that pursues the Marauder must decide how to act when giving bits of information that will be spread out the number of seasons. The information will tell the tale that might change the perception of evil, in this instance.
So, the viewer will get their classic Star Trek Captain and Crew, but they will also get another ship full of “evil” characters that bring more depth and grey area than expected.
It could be called, “Star Trek: Pursuit” or maybe “Star Trek: Marauder” or something like that.
The point to this would really to follow the adventures of a Federation giving chase to a band of marauders. You’d get to know two new Captains, who would act as the power opposites (sort of like Magneto to Xavier). You’d meet two very different crews, and you could compare how they run their ships (both have good/bad qualities). Perhaps the two crews would be forced to go on missions together to save other planets, only to have to resume the pursuit. Perhaps there would be other reasons for these ships to “pause” the pursuit and join forces.
One last thing: the evil ship would need to be protected against tractor beams, transporters, and other such messy technologies that would end the pursuit too early. For some reason, it just doesn’t work. Perhaps the object is the reason the marauders have a super-powered ship. Who knows?
